COURAGE, DON’T LEAVE ME
Courage, don’t leave me is the title of Victor Guzman’s first solo exhibition in Reykjavik. The title relates to his memories of being a 10 year old immigrant, attempting to integrate to a small Norwegian town named Røyken in 1997. The title refers to a quote from a video game called Castlevania 64, where the protagonist exclaims this before he goes to battle. He sees his works in the form of a diary where he, in a narrative way, shows us different memories of confrontations with bullies and pop culture. Identity issues and the act of survival are some of the main topics Victor wants to portray in this exhibition. He does
not see these works as revenge or settlement, but rather as an awareness about xenophobia and bullying.
On this exhibition Victor comments: ‘’The refugee crisis in Europe gave me flashbacks of the way I was treated in school. More borders got closed and the desperate got left outside. It was a matter of survival. I was attacked physically and often with racist words because me and one other boy were the only minorities in a white school at that time. It came to a point where I desired to be white like the others, so that they would accept me. It came to a point where I had suicidal thoughts. Luckily, I found an escape from these identity issues: video games and cartoons’’
Victor Guzman (b. 1987) is a Chilean-Norwegian artist based in Oslo, Norway. He is studying Fine Arts in Bergen Academy of the Arts and Iceland Academy of the Arts.

COURAGE DON’T LEAVE ME eða „Hugrekki, ekki yfirgefa mig“ er titillinn á einkasýningu Victor Guzman, fyrstu sýningu sem hann opnar í Reykjavík. Titillinn tengist minningum hans af því að vera 10 ára innflytjandi árið 1997 í litlum norskum bæ sem heitir Røyken og standa frammi fyrir kynþáttaaðskilnaði. Titillinn á sýningunni er bein vísun í tölvuleik sem heitir Castlevania 64, þar sem söguhetjan hrópar setninguna „Courage don’t leave me“ áður en hann hefur bardaga.
Victor lítur á verk sín sem dagbók og frásögn af minningum um átök við hrekkjusvín og popp menningu. Sjálfsmynd og sjálfsbjargarviðleitni eru með helstu viðfangsefnum sem Victor vinnur með á þessari sýningu. Verkin eru ekki unnin sem hefnd eða uppgjör, heldur sem leið til að skapa vitund um útlendingahatur og einelti.
Victor segir sjálfur um sýninguna: „Flóttamannakrísan í Evrópu minnti mig á það hvernig komið var fram við mig í skóla. Landamæri lokuðust og hinir örvæntingarfullu voru skildir útundan. Þetta sneri um að komast lífs af. Það var ráðist á mig líkamlega og athugasemdir fylgdu sem einkenndust af kynþáttahatri. Við vorum einungis tveir í skólanum á þeim tíma sem tilheyrðum minnihlutahópi. Það kom að því að ég þráði að verða hvítur á hörund eins og hinir, svo að ég yrði samþykktur. Á endanum fóru að vitja mín sjálfsvígshugsanir. En sem betur fer, tókst mér að finna lausn á þessu – í gegnum tölvuleiki og teiknimyndasögur.
Victor Guzman (f.1987) er chílenskur-norskur myndlistarmaður sem lifir og starfar í Osló. Hann nemur myndlist við Bergen Academy of Arts og er þessa önn í skiptinámi í myndlistardeild Listaháskóla Íslands.
