Ýr Jóhannsdóttir hefur unnið að ýmisskonar textílverkefnum undir nafninu Ýrúrarí frá árinu 2012 og lauk diplóma námi í textíl hönnun við Myndlistaskólann í Reykjavík síðastliðið vor. Nokkrum dögum áður en hafist verður handa við að klára námið í Glasgow School of Art býður Ýr fólk velkomið á sína fyrstu einkasýningu, Sweater story, sem stendur opin í Ekkisens á Bergstaðarstræti 1-4. September.
Hugmyndin af Sweater story vaknaði út frá eldri Ýrúrarí peysuhugmyndum sem vantaði baksögu eða hlutverk í stærra samhengi. Leitin að bakgrunni peysanna vatt óvænt upp á sig og út frá þeim varð til saga um tvær peysur, sagða myndrænt í ellefu peysum. Sagan útskýrist best þegar allar peysurnar standa saman, en við opnun sýningarinnar verður svolítil opnunar athöfn þar sem sagan er útskýrð í orðum, hljóði og dansi. Einnig verður útgáfa á “Sweater story” vasabók sem gefur góða yfirsýn yfir verkið.
Þó hlutar verkisins hafi verið í hugmyndabankanum frá árinu 2012 er verkið allt unnið sumarið 2016 af Ýri Jóhannsdóttur. Peysurnar í Sweater story eru í grunnin prjónaðar á heimilis prjónavél, handsaumaðar saman og skreyttar með útsaum og handprjónuðum stykkjum. Garnið í verkefninu er afgangs garn sem hefur safnast upp eftir önnur Ýrúrarí verkefni á undanförnum árum og er því blanda af ull, bómull og akrýl.

Ýr Jóhannsdóttir has been working on multiple textile projects under the name Ýrúrarí since 2012 and finished a diploma degree in textile design at Reykjavík School of Visual Arts last spring. Few days before moving to Glasgow to finish her degree at Glasgow School of Art Ýr welcome you to her first solo exhibition opening in Ekkisens on Bergstaðarstræti 1-4. September.
The idea of Sweater story came from former Ýrúrarí sweater ideas looking for a story and being part of a larger picture. The process of looking for the sweaters context developed surprisingly into a lot more interesting conclusion than expected. The outcome is a story about two sweaters illustrated with eleven sweaters. The story is best explained when all of the sweaters are together, but at the opening night of the exhibition the story will be expressed in words, sounds and dance in an opening ceremony. There will also be a publication of a “Sweater story” booklet that gives a good overview on the project.
Despite the fact that parts of Sweater story have been in the idea bank since 2012 the whole project is made in summer 2016 by Ýr Jóhannsdóttir. The sweaters are knitted on an analogue knitting machine, hand stitched together and decorated with embroidery and pieces knitted by hand. All of the yarn is a leftover yarn from former Ýrúrarí projects a mix of wool, cotton and acrylics.
