That which I fear, awakes and pursues me / Það sem ég hræðist vaknar upp og eltir mig
The exhibition, “That which I fear, awakes and pursues me”, debates the visual representation of fear in the context of both Icelandic sagas as well as the present day news cycle. The byproduct of fear became a plethora of entertainment as a foreshadow of things to come. Presently these ideas are relentlessly used to instill fear and resistance against entire societies. Tellings of mad acts of small groups are compounded upon whole nations and all of a sudden everyone of said nations and their religions become the visual representation of everything evil. Reason is thrown out the window due to the creative power of fear. The devil awakes and behind every corner is the enemy.
The show is a collection of oil paintings on paper and canvas, sound piece, photographs/video work and an installation.
Jakob Veigar Sigurðsson is from Hveragerði. He is a degree in civil engineering and worked as one before he saddled himself into the world of fine art. Jakob graduated with a BA in Fine Arts from Iceland Academy of the Arts in 2016 and currently striving towards his Diploma studies at the Akademie der bildenden kunste in Vienna.
Fear takes control. Igniting an involuntary creative process. Our surroundings start to take on new forms. Reason withdraws due to the power of fear. Cliffs transform into trolls, the lava starts to shift in the fog, shadows gain life, spirits start to bustle. Imagination becomes reality in the mind of the fearful. Throughout history has it been inexhaustible fountain of stories. Fear has created beings and phantams whom become immortalized in the minds of those who believe in them. Today over exaggerated fearmongering are becoming even more effective. News about chaos of men from different religions or different skintones, carry with them the seed of fear from the unknown, new beings and lesions enter the minds of those that allow fear to take control, man starts to see the devil in every corner.

Óttinn tekur völdin. Í gang fer ósjálfrátt sköpunarferli. Hlutir í kringum okkur taka á sig nýjar myndir. Rökhugsunin víkur undan krafti óttans. Klettar breytast i tröll, hraunið í þokunni fer á hreyfingu, skuggar fá líf, vættir fara á stjá. Ímyndunin er raunveruleg í huga óttaslegins manns. Í gegnum tíðinna hefur þetta verið óþrjótandi uppspretta sagna. Óttinn hefur búið til verur og vætti sem verða ódauðlegar í hugum þeirra sem taka mark á sögunum. Í nútímanum verða óttablendnar sögur jafnvel ennþá áhrifaríkari. Fréttir af óhæfuverkum manna af öðrum trúarbrögðum eða litarhætti bera með sér fræ óttans við hið óþekkta, nýjar vættir og meinsemdir verða til í hug þeirra sem leyfa óttanum að taka völdin, menn fara að sjá djöfulinn í hverju horni.
Sýningin, „Það sem ég hræðist vaknar upp og eltir mig“, fjallar um birtingarmyndir óttans bæði í gegnum Íslenska sagnahefð og sagnahefð nútímans. Afurðir óttans urðu uppspretta allskonar sagna sem urðu svo að afþreyingu fólks sem og víti til varnaðar við það sem skyldi varast.
Í nútímanum er þessu beitt miskunnarlaust til að vekja upp ótta og andstöðu við heilu þjóðfélagshópana. Sögur af óhæfuverkum lítilla hópa eru hermdar uppá heilu þjóðirnar og allt í einu eru allir sem tilheyra viðkomandi þjóð eða trúarbrögðum orðnir birtingarmynd hins illa án nokkurra raka. Gagnrýnni hugsun er hent út á hafsauga af/vegna sköpunarkrafti óttans. Djöfullinn vaknar og bak við hverja slæðu býr óvinurinn.
Sýningin samanstendur af olíumálverkum á pappír og striga, hljóðverki, ljósmyndum/videoverki og innsetningu.
Jakob Veigar Sigurðsson er Hveragerðingur. Hann er menntaður byggingatæknifræðingur og vann sem slíkur áður en hann söðlaði um og fór að fást við myndlist. Hann útskrifaðist með BA gráðu í myndlist frá Listaháskóla Íslands 2016 og stundar núna Diplóma nám í myndlist við Akademie der bildenden kunste Í Vín.
